Lagos Justice Reforms: 1,485 Charges Filed, 397 Inmates Freed, ₦1.25bn Saved
The Lagos State Ministry of Justice has ramped up criminal justice reforms from 2023 to 2026. It issued 2,342 legal opinions, filed 1,485 criminal charges, and processed 770 plea bargains to speed up trials and ease court backlogs. Through the Prerogative of Mercy, Governor Sanwo-Olu approved the release of 397 inmates, commuted nine death sentences, and granted one full pardon to reduce prison congestion. Alternative dispute resolution efforts resolved about 3,000 petitions, avoided over ₦1.25 billion in liabilities, and promoted quick settlements. High-profile cases handled include the Owode Onirin killings, an inquest into Master Nkanu Adichie-Esege’s death, and the detention of teenager Michael Adebiyi. Notable convictions include a BRT driver for murder and life sentences for rape and defilement, underlining stronger rule of law and public confidence in the system.
