APC Consensus Plan Falters as Aspirants Across States Demand Direct Primaries
Opposition is growing within the APC as aspirants in states like Yobe, Benue, Nasarawa and others reject consensus primaries. They argue only open contests can guarantee fairness under the Electoral Act, 2026. In Yobe State, key figures including a former Inspector-General of Police insist they did not consent to step down. Similar disputes have emerged in Nasarawa, where top aspirants refuse the governor’s preferred candidate. Benue, Gombe and other states also see resistance. Stakeholders warn that consensus without written consent of all contestants violates the Act and undermines grassroots participation. With consensus arrangements unraveling, the APC may be forced to conduct direct primaries nationwide despite leadership’s defense of the consensus option.
