'Pro Unitate' Rally: Unity Schools Alumni Mobilise Nationwide Against 'Secret' Land Swap
Alumni of Nigeria’s Federal Unity Colleges are set to hold coordinated awareness walks in Lagos, Abuja and Kano on May 9 under the banner “Pro Unitate – Better Together.” They say a Public-Private Partnership deal would swap 30 hectares of school land for N8.5 billion in infrastructure upgrades without any consultation. The arrangement, approved by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission and awarded to a private developer, is meant to fund new classrooms, hostels and a health centre. Alumni argue the prime land—valued at over N36 billion—should remain dedicated to learning and worry a mixed-use estate could undermine the controlled school environment. In a petition to the President now signed by thousands, alumni demand transparency and warn they will pursue all lawful channels to stop what they call an illegal swap. They have also launched plans for a N5 billion development fund to upgrade facilities without selling off school assets.
