NEMA Flags 148 Communities in Jigawa at Moderate Flood Risk in 2026 Forecast
The National Emergency Management Agency has identified 17 local government areas and 148 communities in Jigawa as moderate flood risk zones for the 2026 rainy season. The announcement was made during the launch of the National Preparedness and Response Campaign on flood disasters. Based on the Nigeria Hydrological Agency’s Annual Flood Outlook, NEMA warns of delayed rains, shorter growing seasons, intense downpours and rising temperatures. Highlighted LGAs include Auyo, Birniwa, Birnin Kudu, Dutse, Guri, Gwaram, Hadejia, Jahun, Kafin Hausa, Kaugama, Kirikasamma, Kiyawa, Maigatari, Malam Madori, Miga, Ringim and Taura. To strengthen resilience, NEMA has introduced a Climate-Related Risk Management, Preparedness and Mitigation framework. Residents in risk areas are urged to avoid building on waterways, clear drains of refuse and heed official early warnings. The Jigawa State emergency agency has secured speed and local canoes for prompt evacuations and will step up community sensitisation. Traditional leaders, religious figures and the media are called on to help disseminate timely alerts to safeguard lives and infrastructure.
