Lai Mohammed Warns N100m Form Fees Block Youth from Nigerian Politics

Lai Mohammed Warns N100m Form Fees Block Youth from Nigerian Politics

Former Information Minister Lai Mohammed has highlighted how the soaring costs of nomination forms create barriers for young Nigerians interested in running for office. Speaking at the London School of Economics, he said presidential hopefuls pay up to N100 million — N70 million for nomination and N30 million for expression of interest. Governorship aspirants spend around N50 million and senatorial candidates about N20 million. He explained that parties rely on these fees for funding because membership dues are rarely collected outside election periods. Despite this, he noted that many young, first-time candidates are still succeeding when they understand the rules. Reflecting on his tenure, he added that improving government–citizen communication through town halls and ministerial scorecards was key, since listening to public feedback strengthens policy trust and legitimacy.
