Nkechi Nwaogu Leaves APC for NDC Ahead of 2026 Primaries

Nkechi Nwaogu Leaves APC for NDC Ahead of 2026 Primaries

Former Senator Nkechi Justina Nwaogu, known as “Mama APC,” has formally exited the All Progressives Congress after losing the Abia Central senatorial primary to Hon. Emeka Atuma. Reports say she has negotiated with the Nigeria Democratic Congress and will make her official declaration in her Okpu Umuobo country home today. APC leaders tried to persuade her to stay, but she remained firm in her decision. Under the new Electoral Act, the Independent National Electoral Commission closed its membership window on May 10, 2026, which could complicate her defection. Some party officials warn that a recent court ruling allowing new defectors may be overturned on appeal, creating legal uncertainty for her move. If all goes as planned, she will complete her switch to the NDC ahead of the May 29, 2026 primary election.

Switching parties after a primary defeat doesn't always win votes; sometimes it just confuses the electorate.

Local grassroots organisers should focus on communicating her new NDC platform clearly to Abia Central voters before 2026.
