A Brief History of Real Estate and Property Ownership

Real estate has deep roots in Roman law and Greek philosophy, where private property was treated as a natural right. By the 1500s, land surveying and appraisal had begun to develop as formal professions in England and North America. Major events later shaped the modern property market. The 1803 Louisiana Purchase became one of history's largest land transactions, while brokerage firms and professional real estate bodies emerged in the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Great Depression caused a sharp fall in property values and led to reforms in mortgage financing and housing insurance. Later, fair-housing laws addressed discrimination in property transactions, while online listing platforms changed how people search for homes from the late 1990s onward.
