FCCPC Clarifies There Is No Ban on Airtime and Data Borrowing

FCCPC Clarifies There Is No Ban on Airtime and Data Borrowing

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission says it has not banned airtime or data borrowing services in Nigeria. The statement follows MTN’s suspension of its “Xtratime” service, which the company linked to the new DEON consumer lending regulations. Introduced in July 2025, the DEON rules aim to improve transparency, consumer protection and fair loan recovery. Operators had until January 5, 2026 to comply, or face individual business consequences — not a blanket prohibition by the commission. According to the FCCPC, the regulations require clear fee disclosures, proper registration, stronger oversight of third-party partners and strict data protection safeguards. No directive restricts consumers from accessing lawful telecom value-added services.

I'm not convinced it was solely a regulatory issue; MTN could have planned the pause for technical or financial reasons.

Subscribers should track alternative borrowing options and compare terms before relying on any data or airtime credit service again.
