UK Archives Confirm 1907 Omuagu Bronze Records; Igbo-Ukwu Bronze Dated to 900 AD
I contacted the UK National Archives and British Museum about the 1907 expedition on Omuagu. Both have acknowledged holding records and artefact number Af1908-06620-1161. The archives reference is CAS-332813-V5W8H3. I’ll share full records when available. In 1970, Shaw carbon-dated an Igbo-Ukwu bronze to around 900 AD—five centuries before the Benin Palace bronzes (circa 1400 AD). Ryder’s 1969 work provides further context. So far we have: 1. A 900 AD Igbo-Ukwu bronze (carbon date) 2. A 1908 Omuagu bronze in the British Museum 3. An 1897 Onitsha Ibo Town report (CO 520/30) Can anyone cite a Benin bronze carbon-dated earlier than 900 AD with its museum reference?
