Jesus’ Lesson on True Defilement (Matthew 15:1-20)

Some Pharisees and teachers challenge Jesus because his disciples eat without following the elders’ hand-washing tradition. Jesus rebukes them for valuing human rules over God’s commands and calls them hypocrites. He teaches that what goes into the mouth isn’t what defiles a person. True defilement comes from the heart. Evil thoughts and actions—murder, adultery, theft, false testimony and slander—are what truly defile anyone.
