Hidden Languages of Anioma: Igala, Olukumi, Isoko & Ozarra Communities
In the Anioma region of Delta State, cultural diversity extends beyond Enuani and Ukwuani dialects. Scattered settlements preserve distinct languages that reveal centuries of migration and inter-ethnic ties. Among these enclaves is the Ebu community in Oshimili North, where a southern variant of Igala thrives alongside the Enuani dialect. In Aniocha North, the Olukumi of Odiani speak a Yoruboid tongue related to Kabba and Ondo heritage. The floodplains of Ndokwa East host Isoko settlements like Onogbokor and Iyede-Ame, maintaining ties to Isoko and Ijaw lineage while code-switching with Ukwuani. In Ika South, Oza-Nogogo’s Ozarra language blends Edo and Ika elements born of historic contact. These linguistic islands highlight Anioma’s rich tapestry of movement, coexistence and cultural exchange.
