Dangote’s Peugeot Venture Reboots Nigeria’s Auto Industry
Aliko Dangote is extending his local manufacturing drive to Nigeria’s long-dormant automobile sector. More than ten years after Peugeot Automobile Nigeria folded, vehicles are rolling off a modern assembly line in Kaduna under the Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria (DPAN) banner. DPAN emerged in 2016 when Dangote Industries joined a consortium to acquire a controlling stake in the once-thriving Peugeot plant. Under a new arrangement with the global group now known as Stellantis, models like the Peugeot 301, 3008, 5008, 508 and the Landtrek pickup are now assembled locally. Despite brand recognition and fresh investment, hurdles remain. High production costs, limited consumer financing, foreign exchange volatility and infrastructure gaps still hamper local output. The revival of Peugeot, however, has reignited discussions about rebuilding Nigeria’s industrial base and reducing reliance on imported vehicles.
