Umuahia’s New Bus Terminal Inaugurated and Renamed for FUTO’s First Female VC

Umuahia’s New Bus Terminal Inaugurated and Renamed for FUTO’s First Female VC

Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Wednesday inaugurated the modern Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and formally named it after Prof. Nnenna Nnannaya-Oti, the first female Vice-Chancellor of FUTO. The honour recognises her courage, integrity and commitment as the INEC returning officer during the 2023 governorship election. Governor Otti said Prof. Oti represents all officials and citizens who resisted manipulation to protect the electoral mandate. Designed to accommodate over 340 buses, the new facility will integrate electric bus services, offer real-time arrival tracking, and ease urban congestion. Twenty electric buses are already in operation, with more to be added in phases. Residents were urged to safeguard the terminal by avoiding vandalism and improper waste disposal. The ceremony featured remarks from the Transport Commissioner and Prof. Oti, and a moment of silence for the late former Transport Commissioner.

Highlighting her INEC role is notable, but such gestures rarely lead to real empowerment for women in politics here.

Honouring an academic sounds nice, but did we consider pressing transport challenges rather than focusing on symbolic naming first?

Local groups should partner with the terminal management to create mentorship programs inspired by Prof. Nnannaya-Oti's commitment and proven leadership.
