Cooking Gas Prices Surge to ₦2,400/kg: Can Nigerians Cope?
The price of cooking gas in many parts of Nigeria has jumped from around ₦1,650–₦1,900 per kilogram at major plants to as high as ₦2,400 at some retail outlets. Refilling a standard 12.5kg cylinder now costs between ₦25,000 and ₦30,000. Industry operators point to rising depot charges, higher transport costs, foreign exchange swings and supply chain disruptions as key drivers of the price hike. Households and small businesses say their budgets are already stretched by inflation, and the rising cost of LPG is adding further strain. Some families have begun cutting back on gas use or exploring alternative cooking fuels. Energy experts are urging government and industry to introduce measures that will stabilise the LPG market and improve access to affordable, clean cooking energy.
