Pepe Eyes More Goals After Brace Sends Côte d’Ivoire into World Cup Knockouts

Pepe Eyes More Goals After Brace Sends Côte d’Ivoire into World Cup Knockouts

Nicolas Pépé has set his sights on adding more goals after scoring twice to secure a 2-0 win over Curaçao in their opening 2026 World Cup match. The Villarreal winger became only the second Ivorian to net a brace at a World Cup, emulating Aruna Dindane’s feat from 2006. He also scored Côte d’Ivoire’s fastest-ever World Cup goal, finding the net just seven minutes into the game. “I know I’ve got what it takes,” Pépé said after the match. “This is the reward for all my hard work. My brace was down to the team – brilliant assists from Diomande and Sangaré helped me stay focused and finish.”

A brace is a strong start, but Curaçao's defence looks miles off compared to top World Cup squads Ivory Coast will face.

True, that defence looks shaky next to top squads, but Pepe's brace really boosted their confidence for tougher ties ahead.

He scored twice, sure, but one match doesn't make a tournament star; consistency over several games will tell the real story.

Ivory Coast should focus on quick transitions to get Pepe into space; those flanking runs could unlock more scoring chances.
