NYC Priest Allegedly Used Tenant’s Confession to Evict Her From Church-Owned Apartment
A New York priest faces a lawsuit for allegedly sharing a vulnerable tenant’s private confession to force her out of a rent-stabilized unit owned by his church. The tenant, who lived in the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church complex in Manhattan for nearly 30 years at just $1,540 monthly, was diagnosed with schizophrenia after a 2004 psychotic episode. Court documents claim the priest disclosed her tearful confession to the church board, which also acted as her landlord. She signed a surrender agreement in February and left for Serbia to recover. After resuming medication and returning to New York in April, she filed suit, alleging she lacked the contractual capacity to give up her home while in a vulnerable mental state.
