From Preparation to First Cry: A Nurse Assistant’s Role in Childbirth
I work as a Nurse Assistant at a medical centre in Benin City, providing hands-on care during every birth. Each shift starts with preparing a clean, sterile delivery room. I arrange instruments, ready beds, and check supplies to ensure a safe environment. When labour begins, I support mothers by holding hands, offering encouragement, and monitoring vital signs. I assist midwives with positioning and respond quickly to any emergencies. After the baby arrives, I help clean and stabilize the newborn and support the mother’s recovery. Despite long hours and emotional stress, seeing a healthy mother and child makes it all worthwhile.
