FUOYE Suspends Deputy Dean and SUG President over Alleged Student Extortion

FUOYE Suspends Deputy Dean and SUG President over Alleged Student Extortion

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti has suspended three senior officials for allegedly collecting ₦1,000 from each first-year student without management approval. An investigative committee found that the Directorate for Educational Technology head and the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs organised the fee outside official channels and did not process funds through the bursary. The SUG President is accused of participating in the initial distribution and later receiving ₦700,000 into his personal account. The university management emphasised its commitment to transparency and warned that it will not tolerate financial misconduct or abuse of office. The three officials remain suspended pending further administrative action as investigations continue.

How can FUOYE ensure transparency and student confidence after these alleged unauthorized fees were imposed on first-year students?

Yes, opening an independent audit panel and sharing regular financial reports with student reps will help restore confidence.

It seems odd that the investigation named no clear victims or amounts per person beyond that flat ₦1,000 fee.

I'm not convinced suspending officials is enough without systemic policy review to prevent future unauthorized charges.

A clear fee approval workflow and student representation at management meetings could help avoid similar extortion scares.
