CGPA Calculation Made Easy: Converting Between 5.0 and 4.0 Scales

Many students find CGPA calculations confusing, especially with the NUC’s shift to the 4.0 scale while most schools still use 5.0. Here’s a quick guide: On a 5.0 scale, grades are A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0. On a 4.0 scale, grades are A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, E/F=0. Degree classifications on the 5.0 scale: • First Class: 4.50–5.00 • Second Class Upper: 3.50–4.49 • Second Class Lower: 2.40–3.49 • Third Class: 1.50–2.39 To convert a 5.0 CGPA to the 4.0 scale for international applications, multiply by 0.8. I’ve also created a free online calculator to help you check your CGPA quickly on a reputable educational tools platform.

Isn't it risky to rely solely on a table conversion? We might overlook how different universities calculate GPA weighting.

To avoid mistakes, make we record your grades on both scales side by side each semester before averaging final CGPA.
