AMVCA 2026 Best Movie Race: Six Standout Films
At AMVCA 2026, the Best Movie award crowns the year’s finest in African filmmaking. The ceremony takes place on May 9 at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, hosted by Bovi Ugboma and Nomzamo Mbatha, with Joke Silva as Head Judge. This year’s competition features six films that dominated cinemas and earned acclaim at festivals. The nominees span family dramas shot on 16mm film, female-driven comedies, intense thrillers, and pan-African productions. Highlights include “The Herd,” a debut thriller about a woman racing to free her kidnapped husband; “Behind the Scenes,” Funke Akindele’s record-breaking family drama; and “My Father’s Shadow,” the first Nigerian film to win a Cannes Special Mention. The lineup also features “3 Cold Dishes,” a cross-border revenge saga against human traffickers; “The Serpent’s Gift,” an Igbo inheritance thriller steeped in mysticism; and “Gingerrr,” a female-led heist comedy that grossed over ₦500 million.
