Ogun’s Democracy Under Threat, MAO Slams APC’s “Consensus” Candidate Yayi

High Chief Mustapha Abdulakeem Owolabi of the Egba Agenda Forum has condemned Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola’s emergence as the APC’s consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State. He called the process a “quiet and shameful orchestration” that bypasses genuine popular mandate. Owolabi warned that imposing a candidate without open contest undermines democracy and risks turning Ogun into an extension of entrenched political interests. He blamed past administrations for recycling failure by neglecting infrastructure and creating dependency through token empowerment schemes. He also raised alarms over a weakened opposition, arguing that politics needs credible alternatives and constant accountability. He accused some party actors of trading principles for appointments and loyalty to the “anointed.” In conclusion, Owolabi urged Nigerians to reflect on the health of their democracy and to demand a break from political manipulation before the future is compromised.

It's odd that a party would label a bypass of popular opinion 'quiet and shameful' yet still defend the approach as legitimate.

Maybe the APC argues that consensus prevents potentially divisive primaries, but skipping open ballots still feels undemocratic to many observers.

Local voters could organize town hall meetings to demand clearer selection rules and hold party leaders accountable before the next primary.
