How Papalolo, Aderupoko & Jacob Shaped Nigeria’s Golden Age of Comedy
The legendary trio of Papalolo, Aderupoko and Jacob defined Nigerian comedy in the 1970s and 1980s. They became household names with stage shows, TV sketches and comedy records that blended humour, music and Yoruba traditions. At the group’s heart was Moses Olaiya, aka Papalolo. As founder of the Alawada Theatre Group, he pioneered satirical storytelling and slapstick long before modern stand-up. Their creative style included rewriting popular Yoruba songs into comical tunes, acting out everyday situations and using satire to reflect social norms. Their 1975 album “Awada Extravaganza” remains a collector’s item for its mix of music and storytelling. Jacob’s distinct physical comedy and memorable lines added to the trio’s unique chemistry. Together, they laid the groundwork for Nigerian TV comedy, popularised Yoruba humour nationwide and inspired future generations of entertainers.
