Mozambique Defies Court Order, Deports 31 Nigerian Traders

Mozambique Defies Court Order, Deports 31 Nigerian Traders

The Mozambican government has deported 31 Nigerian traders despite a court order for their release. They were arrested on February 28 at a spare parts market in Maputo and charged without public disclosure of any offences. A heavy rainfall on March 13 delayed their arraignment. The Maputo City Court later ruled that all 42 detainees should be freed, but authorities rearrested them. Uchenna Nwafor, president of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Mozambique, said 13 traders were deported on Monday and 18 on Thursday. Eleven others remain in detention under unclear circumstances. Local legal counsel and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission have criticised the actions as contempt of court and called for full transparency and due process.

Which factors do you think led Mozambique to disregard the court's ruling and deport traders?

It really seems odd they'd override a legal ruling like that, feels like more political pressure at play.

It seems odd that no formal charges were released even after their February arrest at the market.

I'm not convinced this situation always reflects political bias; maybe there were undisclosed security concerns behind the arrests.

Traders should ensure proper documentation and consider legal counsel immediately when facing detention abroad to avoid such risks.
