Ex-Liverpool Midfielder Sissoko Slams Racist Chants, Urges Yamal to Rethink Spain Career
Former Liverpool and Mali midfielder Mohamed Sissoko has spoken out after teenage star Lamine Yamal was subjected to Islamophobic and xenophobic chants during Spain’s goalless draw with Egypt at RCDE Stadium. Stadium screens and the public address system warned fans against discriminatory singing at half-time and again early in the second half, but sections of the crowd continued to whistle and chant. Yamal called the behaviour “disrespectful” and “intolerable.” Sissoko described the incident as “a disgrace,” saying he would reconsider playing for Spain if he were in Yamal’s shoes. Spanish police have launched an investigation, and the Spanish Football Federation has officially condemned the chants.
