Unemployed 26-Year-Old Jailed After Attempting to Steal Police Armoured Vehicle
A 26-year-old unemployed man has been sentenced to one month in prison by the Kwadaso Circuit Court in Kumasi for trying to hijack a police armoured vehicle in the Ashanti Region. Court records show he was arrested on April 15 after taking possession of the vehicle near Nkawie Market, where the officer had stopped to buy medication. During proceedings on July 21, the suspect changed his plea from not guilty to guilty after a psychiatric report from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital confirmed he was fit for trial. Justice Jephthah Appau noted the young offender did not waste the court’s time and handed down a reduced sentence. Prosecutors say the vehicle, marked GP 1131, was being driven for servicing when the officer fell ill. Regional traffic officers and rapid-response riders later intercepted the suspect near Mim. The court heard he initially pleaded not guilty on May 5 but admitted liability when the psychiatric findings were presented.
