Three Years On, Tinubu Still Fails to Deliver the ‘Down Payment’ for Reliable Power
During his 2023 campaign, President Bola Tinubu mocked the PDP for failing to deliver electricity. He declared they had not made even a “down payment for a roasted corn of electricity,” and many Nigerians agreed. Now, three years later, that benchmark falls squarely on his own administration. Despite tariff hikes, policy reforms, and band classifications, power supply remains erratic. Millions of households and businesses still rely on generators, inverters, and alternative energy to survive. Perhaps the most telling move is powering the Presidential Villa with solar energy. While renewable sources are welcome, critics argue it signals a lack of faith in the national grid—even by the presidency itself. Ordinary citizens without such options remain trapped in darkness. The irony is hard to ignore. A leader who once demanded a symbolic “down payment” has yet to secure even that. Nigerians continue to wait for the promise of reliable electricity to become reality.
