Education Minister Says Improved Local Universities Are Curbing Student Exodus
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has challenged reports of a mass departure of Nigerian students abroad. In a recent interview on national television, he credited fresh investments in tertiary institutions for reversing the trend. Alausa dismissed 2023 data that placed Nigeria third in outbound student mobility, calling it outdated. He explained that when the current administration took office, academic sessions were frequently suspended and funding was low. Since then, he says, session continuity and infrastructure upgrades have boosted confidence in home campuses. He pointed to growing demand for the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board programme and oversubscription at the University of Lagos law school as evidence. According to ministry monitoring, outbound student numbers have fallen sharply in 2024 and 2025.
