Tinubu’s Four Legacy Road Projects to Link All Six Geopolitical Zones

Tinubu’s Four Legacy Road Projects to Link All Six Geopolitical Zones

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, says President Tinubu’s four major road projects will form an interconnected loop across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. He made the remarks while hosting an ECOWAS Bank delegation in Abuja during appraisal of funding for the Calabar-Abuja Super Highway. Umahi explained that the 750km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will join the Trans-Sahara Super Highway at Ndibe Beach in Cross River State. Section One of the Trans-Sahara route spans 123.6km from Ndibe Beach to the Benue border. Works have begun on further sections through Benue, Kogi and Nasarawa. The minister highlighted additional plans to integrate existing dams for irrigation and power, spur industrial growth along the corridors and reduce travel time between Calabar and Abuja to four hours. He also outlined links from the Abuja-Akwanga corridor through Jos, Bauchi, Gombe, Biu and Maiduguri, and a new route from Victoria Island to Badagry including a 3.5km tunnel. The ECOWAS Bank delegation confirmed the project has cleared its first credit committee and will proceed to the second committee before final board approval in July. Umahi praised the bank’s support and emphasized the need to fast-track loan disbursement as construction reaches key milestones.

Definitely, tighter road links might spark fresh trade vibes across each zone, making goods flow smoother.

Building a loop across six zones sounds ambitious, but past delays and budget overruns could slow progress significantly.

We shouldn't assume uniform benefit: communities near those highways may still face insecurity and poor feeder roads off the main loop.

One way to monitor project impact is setting up local oversight committees in each zone to track timelines, costs, and community feedback.
