South Africa Deports 586 Nigerians, Bars Re-Entry for Five Years

South African Home Affairs confirmed that 586 Nigerian nationals living illegally in the country have been repatriated. The first group of 268 departed on Thursday, and the remaining passengers will return on Monday, 15 June 2026. Emergency travel documents were issued by the Nigerian High Commission for all individuals. Home Affairs declared them undesirable under the Immigration Act, banning their re-entry for five years. Officials said deportations and repatriations have increased by 46% over the past two years. Some applicants with asylum status withdrew their claims before departure, raising questions about the legitimacy of certain applications.

It's surprising how quickly the first 268 were repatriated with emergency documents, yet underlying migration challenges remain unaddressed.
