Remembering David McCallum: From Illya Kuryakin to NCIS’s Dr. Ducky
David McCallum rose to fame in the 1960s as secret agent Illya Kuryakin on The Man from U.N.C.L.E., earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. He later starred in Colditz and Sapphire & Steel before reaching a new generation as Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on NCIS for 20 seasons. A talented musician, McCallum recorded several classical albums and published the crime novel Once a Crooked Man in 2016. He served as a lieutenant in the British Army during National Service and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. McCallum married Jill Ireland in 1957 and later wed Katherine Carpenter in 1967, with whom he had two children. He became a U.S. citizen in 1999. He died of natural causes at age 90 in New York City on 25 September 2023.
