Interior Minister Orders Revocation of Passports for Nigerians Who Renounced Citizenship
Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to immediately withdraw and deactivate passports held by Nigerians whose renunciation of citizenship has been formally approved by the President. In a statement by his media adviser, Babatunde, the Minister cited Section 29(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that anyone who renounces Nigerian citizenship ceases to be a citizen and must surrender all sovereign documents, including passports. Tunji-Ojo explained that this directive supports ongoing passport and visa reforms. He affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to securing borders, preventing identity fraud, and preserving the sanctity of Nigerian citizenship while facilitating legitimate travel.
