Localize NYSC Postings to Protect Graduates and Maximize Impact
When my cousin received his NYSC call-up letter, our home fell silent instead of celebrating. He was posted to the North-East, and my aunt spent that morning in frantic prayers for his safety on dangerous highways. NYSC began in 1973 to heal a divided nation by sending graduates to unfamiliar regions. Today, we connect online and travel freely for work, school, and leisure. We already experience other cultures on social media and build relationships across ethnic lines without long, risky road trips. With rising highway kidnappings and insecurity, forcing every graduate from Osun to Zamfara is a gamble too far. Let state of origin or residence be the default posting. Graduates who want to explore other regions can opt in. This change keeps our youth safe and ensures they serve effectively in communities they understand. Localizing NYSC postings isn’t division—it’s common sense. Our youth deserve to serve without risking their lives. It’s time to update NYSC for 21st-century Nigeria.
