Gombe Magistrate Sentenced to 2½ Years for Taking N1m Bribe
A magistrate in Gombe State has been jailed for two years and six months after pleading guilty to receiving a N1 million bribe. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission opened the case after the Gombe Ministry of Justice reported that Magistrate Muhammad Suleiman Kumo accepted the money through a court registrar’s Zenith Bank account in November 2024. He was first arraigned in December 2025 on three counts of bribery. Kumo challenged the court’s jurisdiction as a judicial officer, but the judge ruled against him in February 2026. In May, he changed his plea from not guilty to guilty. The court ordered him to pay N500,000 in compensation to the Commission and granted an option of a N250,000 fine. Delivering judgment, the presiding judge noted the seriousness of the offence and affirmed the sentence under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act.
