Stakeholders in Jos Hold Roundtable to Address Farmer-Herder Clashes
Key stakeholders from government, civil society and community groups met in Jos under the theme “Addressing Farmer-Herder Conflicts in the Context of Criminality and Land Disputes.” The roundtable was organised by the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in partnership with the Plateau State Peace Building Agency, with support from a Peacecore II Project funder. Participants included government officials, traditional leaders, security agencies and civil society organisations. The Country Manager of the dialogue centre stressed the need for inclusive talks to tackle land disputes, climate change pressures, banditry and illegal arms proliferation. An expert adviser on the project outlined recent achievements, including multiple local and zonal peace agreements, frameworks with local government chairmen and greater women’s involvement. He highlighted a women-led dialogue in Northern Plateau that inspired neighbouring communities in Kaduna to boost female inclusion in traditional roles. The Plateau State Livestock Commissioner described most clashes as community disputes best settled through reconciliation. Panel discussions further explored stakeholder roles and community-driven early warning and conflict-resolution structures.
