Hakimi Expresses Regret Over Towel Controversy at AFCON 2025

Hakimi Expresses Regret Over Towel Controversy at AFCON 2025 — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has opened up about the controversial towel incidents involving opposing goalkeepers in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final and final. Speaking to a Spanish broadcaster via a sports news outlet, he admitted the team’s efforts to remove towels from Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali and Senegal’s Edouard Mendy were tense and regrettable. He said the image did not reflect the respect Morocco holds for its opponents. Despite the controversy, Morocco claimed the title after a penalty shoot-out win over Senegal. The losing side has appealed the Confederation of African Football’s decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Hakimi said he hopes the final ruling will serve the best interests of African football.

It's interesting that he only spoke to a Spanish broadcaster, as if he's trying to control the narrative abroad more than here.

Apology aside, a team leader must know better than to tamper with opponents' equipment and risk sportsmanship.

Teams should review their fair play workshops so captains understand proper conduct and avoid incidents like the towel grabbing episode.
