Anambra Speaker Hails Bishop Kukah as COOU Chancellor, Applauds Prof. Onwualu’s Governing Council Role
The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Nkem Udeze, has praised Governor Soludo’s decision to appoint Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah as Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. He described the appointment as a statement of institutional seriousness and highlighted Kukah’s global scholarship and moral leadership. An alumnus of COOU with both a Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s degree, Udeze spoke from personal conviction. He said the university shaped his life and pledged the Assembly’s full support for its future growth. Udeze also welcomed the choice of Prof. Peter Onwualu as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. He believes these dual appointments reinforce the university’s leadership architecture and signal a deeper investment in its academic soul. Reaffirming the legislature’s ongoing commitment, the Speaker recalled the Assembly’s role in renaming the institution in 2014, establishing its teaching hospital, and approving the 2025 budget that allocates ₦22 billion for development and ₦11 billion for smart schools.
