After 10 Months Without Pay, Soldier Races Home to Find One Twin Dead and the Other Fighting for Life
When I returned to Abuja, a soldier on duty flagged me down for a lift. I agreed to take him and his colleague toward Zuba. A few metres from Giri junction, he confessed he hadn’t been paid in ten months. He was rushing home after hearing one of his newborn twins had died and the other was in critical condition. He only had ₦4,500 on him—far too little to reach his destination. I gave him ₦20,000, took his number, and promised to check on his baby’s health. How can we expect these soldiers to defend us when they aren’t paid? Owing them wages they’ve earned only undermines our security. May God bless him and his family.
