Empowering Vulnerable Voters: ₦150k Now or ₦5k on Election Day?

Good morning, everyone. I’ve been debating with a friend abroad—an anti-Tinubu critic—about the First Lady’s proposal to empower vulnerable Nigerians with ₦50k–₦150k before the elections. Surprisingly, he supports it. He argues that if this fund reaches people early, they won’t be swayed by the token ₦5k handout on voting day. He even expected Peter Obi’s camp to launch such an initiative first. Now he thinks Mrs. Tinubu’s move could make small election-day gifts ineffective. What do you think? Is it more reasonable to distribute substantial aid before the polls or offer a modest sum only on election day?

Do you think giving ₦150k before elections genuinely reduces vote selling, or might it create new expectations and dependencies among vulnerable communities?

True, giving ₦150k beforehand could curb vote selling, but it might also set ongoing expectations. Sustainable empowerment matters too.

It's interesting that the proposal ranges from ₦50k to ₦150k upfront, compared to just ₦5k on election day for all voters.

I'm not convinced early cash handouts won't be diverted by local leaders before reaching those in need.

Dem suppose involve community watchdogs and clear digital tracking so money go direct to vulnerable voters without middlemen.
