Tinubu Orders Quick Intervention to Tackle Soaring Cooking Gas Prices
President Bola Tinubu has directed petroleum agencies and stakeholders to act immediately to curb the rising cost of cooking gas nationwide. At an emergency meeting, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the president is concerned about the heavy burden on Nigerian households. Ekpo warned that boosting supply alone won’t solve the problem without better infrastructure, efficient logistics and a transparent pricing framework. Regulators, gas producers, marketers and terminal operators met to identify root causes and explore practical ways to improve availability across the country. The Permanent Secretary, Patience Oyekunle, described LPG affordability as vital to Nigeria’s energy transition and noted that higher gas prices are pushing up the cost of goods and services. Rabiu Umar, CEO of the Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, pointed to high landing costs, foreign-exchange challenges and transport bottlenecks but expressed optimism that ongoing talks will stabilise prices in the coming weeks.
