Experts Call for Autism Acceptance as an Everyday Lifestyle

Experts Call for Autism Acceptance as an Everyday Lifestyle

The Bethel Xafe Autism Foundation has urged parents to embrace autism as part of daily life. Foundation founder Dr. Oluwatosin Akande spoke at an Autism Acceptance Conference in Lagos under the theme “When Inclusion Becomes a Lifestyle, Not Just a Policy.” Dr. Akande stressed that acceptance is the first step toward building inclusive families, schools and communities. She encouraged parents to focus on children’s strengths and mentor them rather than view autism as a disability. Speakers including Dr. Adeola Ekine, Mrs. Solape Azazi and advocate Remi Olutimayin highlighted the need for practical inclusion beyond policy. They called on educators, journalists and young people to promote awareness, empathy and opportunity for those on the autism spectrum. A young actress, Dera Osadebe, and her mother urged society to reject stigma and create safe environments for autistic children. Both emphasised that small, daily acts of inclusion can help every child thrive.

It's interesting experts insist inclusion must be a lifestyle, but many schools still lack real support systems for autistic children.

I get the idea of lifestyle inclusion, yet some policies feel more like ticking boxes than actually changing daily attitudes.

Start small: include autistic family members in meal planning or playtime to normalize inclusion beyond boardroom policies.
