Former Power Minister Saleh Mamman Convicted for ₦33.8bn Fraud
The Federal High Court in Abuja has found ex-Power Minister Saleh Mamman guilty on 12 counts of fraud and money laundering. Justice James Omotosho ruled that the EFCC proved his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The court determined he illegally diverted about ₦33.8 billion in public funds. Part of the money was used to buy Abuja property with a cash payment of $655,700 (₦200 million) outside banking channels. Funds allocated to the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric projects were also siphoned through Bureau de Change operators, who converted them into foreign currency before handing them to the defendant. “The evidence of the prosecution is overwhelming,” the judge said, noting that Mamman’s defence offered no credible proof to challenge the case.
