Sports: A Gold Mine – Chief Mustapha Challenges Young Athletes at RIYE Under-15 Circuit
At the first RIYE Under-15 Athletics Circuit in Abeokuta, the Osi of Egbaland, Chief Bode Mustapha, urged Nigerians to embrace sports as a pathway to success. Organised by the Tunde Delu Initiative, the event drew over 2,000 athletes from Remo, Ijebu, Yewa and Egba districts. Speaking as a former Nigerian table tennis international and vice president of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, he recounted how a single competition changed his life: “After winning a tournament at 18, a sponsor offered to send me abroad to study. That opportunity made me who I am today.” He encouraged young athletes to stay disciplined and focused, stressing that talent alone is not enough. He also commended Honourable Tunde Delu and the organising committee for launching the championship. To support grassroots development, he pledged cash rewards for relay winners and an endowment fund for standout performers. Widely regarded as one of Ogun State’s largest grassroots athletics meets, the circuit provides a vital platform for discovering and nurturing future champions who can represent Nigeria on the global stage.
