‘It Hurts’: Senegal Coach Thiaw on Painful 3-2 World Cup Loss to Belgium

Pape Thiaw expressed deep disappointment after Senegal’s Round of 32 exit at the FIFA World Cup 2026. His side squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 against Belgium’s team led by Rudi Garcia. Habib Diarra put Senegal ahead just before the half-hour mark, and Ismaila Sarr extended the lead early in the second half. However, substitute Romelu Lukaku and captain Youri Tielemans struck three late goals to complete the comeback. Reflecting on the defeat, Thiaw said: “We’re out – it hurts. We must congratulate Belgium, but we weren’t able to hold onto our two-goal lead. We have to accept this – that’s football.”

It's easy to blame Thiaw, but perhaps individual errors and a sudden tactical shift by Belgium deserve more focus.
