INEC to Engage 1.4 Million NYSC Members for 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission plans to recruit over 1.4 million ad hoc workers for the 2027 general elections, up from 1.2 million in 2023. INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan praised National Youth Service Corps members for their discipline and proficiency with election technology. He noted they made up nearly 90% of registration and presiding officers in many states last cycle. The commission assured that insurance, welfare, and security arrangements for corps members will be improved. It detailed that 707,384 corps members are needed for the presidential and national assembly polls, and another 707,384 for the governorship and state assembly elections. Additional staff will cover off-cycle governorship and bye-elections in Ekiti, Osun, Nasarawa, Enugu, Rivers, Ondo, Kebbi, and Kano states. INEC also said it would require about ₦873.78 billion to conduct the 2027 elections, compared with ₦313.4 billion in 2023.
