Cameroon’s President Appoints Son as Vice President and Head of Armed Forces

Cameroon’s President Appoints Son as Vice President and Head of Armed Forces

President Paul Biya has issued a decree appointing his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice President of the Republic and Head of the Armed Forces. The decree, dated April 4, 2026, also names him Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence. The move places Franck Biya at the centre of Cameroon’s security structure. It follows constitutional and defence provisions and will be published urgently in the Official Gazette. This appointment comes months after Biya, 92, secured an unprecedented eighth term amid protests and allegations of electoral fraud by opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary. The government denies the fraud claims and says the Constitutional Council dismissed all challenges for lack of evidence.

I'm not convinced this appointment alone shifts the political balance entirely; Cameroon's situation seems more complex.

While some praise this move as stability, concentrating authority in a single family risks undermining democratic norms rather than preserving order.

Cameroon's civil society groups should monitor the new Vice President's actions closely and advocate for transparent oversight of military directives moving forward.
