NDLEA and Patent Medicine Vendors Unite to Curb Drug Abuse in Edo

NDLEA and Patent Medicine Vendors Unite to Curb Drug Abuse in Edo

The NDLEA Edo State Command held a one-day workshop in Benin to partner with patent medicine vendors in the fight against substance abuse. The event, themed “Patent Medicine Vendors as Frontline Defenders,” aims to bridge regulation and community-level healthcare. Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju urged vendors to reinforce ethical dispensing, monitor supply chains, identify red flags in prescriptions and report illicit drug sales. He stressed that when prescription drugs and codeine syrups fall into the wrong hands, addiction and broken families follow. Participants explored drug laws, red-flag warning signs and community referral systems. A similar workshop will cover Edo Central and Edo North. The state president of NAPPMED pledged ongoing collaboration to protect public health.

Workshop fine, but vendors no fit tackle drug abuse alone—we need regulators and community to join effort too.

It's interesting to see NDLEA collaborating with community vendors, but I wonder if a one-day workshop can really bridge long-term regulation gaps.

I'm not convinced that patent medicine vendors have the capacity to act as frontline defenders without extra resources and ongoing support.

Vendors could set up simple tracking logs and regular check-ins with NDLEA officers to monitor suspicious sales and report trends promptly.
