Lagos Faces Prolonged Blackout After Egbin Plant and Key Transmission Line Fail
Electricity supply in Lagos is under severe threat after Egbin Power Station shut down on April 28. A central compressor failure and a malfunction in the circulating water pump forced the plant to halt generation, dropping output from 641 MW to zero. The disruption coincided with a fault on the Osogbo–Ikeja West 330 kV transmission line, which limits the flow of available power into the city. With both generation and transmission affected, the Nigerian grid faces a significant shortfall. System operators have begun rationing electricity to stabilise the network and prevent a wider collapse. They are reallocating available load among distribution companies and prioritising critical national infrastructure. Contingency measures include optimising output from other power plants. Operators apologise for the inconvenience to Lagos residents and say all stakeholders are working to restore normal supply as quickly as possible.
