New Power Minister Vows to Stabilise National Grid in Three Months
Nigeria’s incoming Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, pledged during his Senate confirmation hearing to stabilise the national grid within his first three months in office and deliver visible progress in 100 days. He told lawmakers his top priorities will be restoring grid stability, enforcing discipline across the power value chain, and closing systemic leakages that have plagued the sector for years. Tegbe said he will return to the National Assembly with a detailed reform roadmap and clear milestones. Highlighting a ₦6 trillion debt burden weighing down the industry, he warned that liquidity challenges have hampered gas supply and power output. He also acknowledged that entrenched interests benefiting from the current inefficiencies could resist his reforms. Tegbe succeeds former minister Adebayo Adelabu at a time when generation capacity often falls below 3,000 MW, leaving homes and businesses dependent on private generators. The coming months will test whether his bold promises can translate into real improvements.
