Lupita Nyong’o Claps Back at Critics Over Helen of Troy Role in Nolan’s Odyssey
Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has pushed back at critics who questioned her casting as Helen of Troy (and Clytemnestra) in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film. Speaking to Elle magazine, she said she won’t waste time defending a decision she believes in. “The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not,” she explained. Nyong’o highlighted the epic scale of The Odyssey and the need for a diverse, powerful cast. She also noted that her focus is on the character’s strength and story rather than traditional notions of beauty. “I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks?” she asked. Christopher Nolan praised her performance for its poise and emotional depth. The film’s ensemble includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and others. Universal Pictures will release The Odyssey in cinemas on July 17.
