FirstPower Probes Alleged ₦2.1M Demand on Amudo Community for Transformer Repair
FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company has launched a full investigation into claims that it demanded ₦2.1 million from Amudo Community in Awka to fix a vandalised transformer. The allegation arose during a customer forum on March 18, when a resident and journalist insisted villagers were asked to pay that sum. The Managing Director, Engr. Okechukwu Okafor, denied any company directive for such a levy. He urged the accuser to present evidence or identify staff involved, warning that anyone found culpable would face dismissal and prosecution. Representatives of Amudo Community later confirmed to FirstPower’s management that the company covered the full repair cost of about ₦4 million. They clarified that the only local funds raised—approximately ₦600,000–₦700,000—were for CCTV and solar lights to protect the transformer, not for its repair. FirstPower reaffirmed its policy against charging customers for asset repairs. The company pledged to continue the inquiry until it uncovers the truth and called on the public to verify information through official channels before drawing conclusions.
